Barhale are upgrading Wolverhampton sewage treatment works flows
24th October 2024Following our appointment by Severn Trent Water a key Wolverhampton sewage treatment works (STW) at its Lower Penn site will be closed and converted into a sewage pumping station SPS. Our teams are currently carrying out a £2.6m programme focused on further improving the quality of water leaving Severn Trent Water’s Lower Penn STW able to meet new targets set by the Environment Agency and the Drinking Water Inspectorate.
Our focus is on the transfer of the sewage treatment process to the nearby Barnhurst STW via the existing Warstones Pumping Station, located in Hamble Road. To make this possible, Barhale is constructing a new 800m3 caissoned shaft tank pumping station capped with a 300mm PCC slab, and chemical dosing system.
On completion, flows will be transferred via a new 1.8km rising main from Lower Penn STW to the Warstones Pumping Station where a proposed three new 24m x 2.1m diameter underground storage pipes will be installed.
Barhale’s Regional Director James Ingamells said the works would provide a vital upgrade for sewage management to the west of Wolverhampton.
“Lower Penn STW has been operational for some time and now needs to be upgraded,” he said. “These improvements at Lower Penn STW will bring benefits to the local environment.
“This will also provide a general increase to network resilience by increasing its capacity to hold rain and wastewater. We look forward to working closely with Severn Trent Water over the coming months and to reaching a successful completion.”
