Barhale leaving a legacy
27th November 2024In a significant milestone for Thames Water and the communities it serves, the recently completed works at Thames Tideway tunnel carried out by Barhale and Thames Water aimed to mitigate combined sewer overflows in high-density urban areas, where aging infrastructure and increasing demands had created frequent overflows and environmental risks. This important initiative was recently highlighted on BBC news where the first four sites within the Thames Tideway Tunnel are now operational.

The new system delivered by Tideway and running from Acton storm tanks in the west of London to Abbey Mills pumping station, east London, integrated with the old system at many points and Barhale worked with Tideway Integration Group (TIG) who were responsible for the interface between existing TWUL critical assets and the new ‘super sewer’.
Due to changes in the scope by the Environmental Agency (EA) to limit the time the Lee Tunnel was shutdown, which became a two-week time frame, Barhale worked around the clock to install the pre-designed proprietary wall solution and had a different approach to the type of construction, mainly to minimise risks. This solution included a precast Lego (Legato) shaped concrete block sections for ease and flexibility of the install. These were also carried out using cost effective materials and were durable based on the lack of reinforcement required.
Thank you to all the Barhale team for their dedication in completing this project successfully.
