Paul showcases the apprenticeship QS route

5th December 2024

Behind every successful project, there is a professional ensuring that costs are controlled and resources are optimised. The quantity surveyor (QS) plays a pivotal role in this process and for those embarking on this path through an apprenticeship, the learning curve is steep, but rewarding. The journey of a QS is a mixture of learning applications and growth and it’s not without its challenges but for apprentice QS, Paul Wavingana, it’s these very challenges that make the role so rewarding. In this edition, Paul talks to our comms team, detailing his highs, lows and his Barhale journey so far.

Background

Paul joined Barhale in September 2023, after returning from a period of work experience with Barhale whilst at school. Paul shares what a positive experience this was and along with a recommendation from a family member already working at Barhale, he knew this was a good move. Prior to working for Barhale, Paul completed his GCSEs, including engineering and then went on to do an A-Level and BTEC in sixth form. His intention was to go into engineering after school but he then had a change of heart. “I always wanted to work in construction as I am a hands-on sort of person so that lead me to do a GCSE in Engineering and I have always been around construction as family members work in the industry. However I realised I didn’t really like engineering. I found myself liking maths a lot. Dealing with numbers. My dad gave me the idea to combine the two qualities together and become a QS.” At this early stage, this change in direction is reflective of his strengths and weaknesses and how he was able to identify a better route for him in terms of his career at an early stage.

Progress, highlights and challenges

One year into the apprenticeship and despite transport challenges getting to sites, due to not having a driving licence yet, Paul is extremely pleased with his progress so far. He readily admits it has been a massive learning curve but he believes what he has learnt and implemented has been very impactful. His day consists of completing forecasts, CVRs, liaising with subcontractors and dealing with subcontractor payments. Paul works on Thames Water and Southern Water projects such as Manor Road and Corporation Street and having taken over the QS job on our New River Phase 2 project, which is now complete, he has made a significant contribution to the projects he has worked on and his development as a QS. What has also helped his development is the trust from his team and the confidence he is developing. “I’m quite a reserved person. I used to overthink a lot. Being able to speak to new people, talk to sub-contractors, gaining that trust from my line manager to go out and talk to subcontractors – that’s a highlight for me.” Paul’s line manager, Fergal Nolan, managing quantity surveyor (southern region) shares his thoughts on Paul; “Since commencing his apprenticeship just over a year ago, Paul has made significant progress that has been drastically accelerated by the practical on-site experience he has received, alongside his university studies. He is an asset to our team.”

Strong communication and feedback

A crucial part of Paul’s great development in the apprenticeship has been his ability to communicate effectively with his line manager. “The communication between me and my line manager is great. I understand his points and I try to integrate his feedback into my work.” Paul’s proactive approach to seeking reviews and applying feedback has allowed him to consistently improve and thrive in his role.

Pride in his achievements

Beyond the professional, Paul has a deep sense of pride in his past football career, where he developed important skills, which plays a crucial role in his current role. “I was a captain and hence, was someone to look up to despite being one of the smallest and goofiest members of the team.” Paul’s time on the team helped him cultivate resilience, teamwork and determination, all of which he has implemented within the apprenticeship.

Motivated by opportunities and recommendations

For Paul, the biggest motivator in his apprenticeship is the abundance of opportunities. “It’s amazing how many benefits it offers, like full coverage of my university studies.” Having access to both hands-on experience and academic support has provided Paul with the perfect environment to grow and develop his career. For anyone considering an apprenticeship with Barhale, Paul advises; “Do it, it’s better to regret doing something than to regret not doing it. I love the job, the experience. It definitely feels like I’m part of a family. I’ve met some great people. It’s really good.” With numerous benefits, great people and a supportive environment, Paul believes that an apprenticeship offers the perfect opportunity to grow and succeed in a fulfilling career.
